THE ROOTS OF FUNCTION COFFEE LABS
The story of Function Coffee Labs started much farther from the City of Brotherly Love than you might expect. It actually started across the pond in the UK. That is where the owners of Function Coffee Labs—Ross Nickerson and Megan McCusker—first met and bonded over their shared love of coffee.
How did a former physics professor with a degree in mechanical engineering and an administrative coordinator with a degree in psychology, anthropology, and business administration come to run their own coffee shop?
Well, it actually all begins with a bad cup of coffee. Ross, who didn’t start drinking coffee until after he had graduated from Penn, quickly became fixated on coffee and its creation. Soon enough, he was studying every technical aspect of coffee and how it could be improved through experimentation.
After visiting coffee shops across Europe, Ross and Megan finally transformed their dream of opening their own shop into reality. In April of 2015, the husband-wife duo created an Instagram account for Function Coffee Labs to gain a following. Five months later, an LLC came to fruition.
Six years later, the couple has turned what was initially a distant thought into one of the most successful local coffee shops. Now a pillar of the community, Function Coffee Labs is still committed to its initial goals—using science to break the mold of traditional coffee, experimenting to deliver unique flavors, and ultimately, providing the neighborhood with an extraordinary coffee experience.
WHAT’S BREWING?
It’s about time we get to what’s really important at Function Coffee Labs: the coffee. They offer a wide variety of drinks, ranging from their coffees to a vast selection of teas, hot chocolate, and more.

LAB LINE COFFEES
Alongside their house coffee, Function Coffee Labs also offers three high-quality, single origin brews prepared via Hario V60 pourover. From fruity and floral to earthy and nutty, these options offer a much more vibrant range of flavors for those in search of a more complex cup.
These are best served black but can also pair well with a small amount of steamed milk as a cortado or cappuccino.
