Mazda CX-9 vs Ford Edge
There’s a lot of research that goes into choosing your next SUV in Trevose, Langhorne, Bensalem, and Philadelphia. Fortunately, Faulkner Mazda Trevose is here to help with side-by-side comparisons to help you determine which model is best for your family.
Today, we’re looking at the 2019 Mazda CX-9 vs. Ford Edge. Which one has more interior comforts, better performance specs, and higher safety ratings? See what our inspections of each model have found!
Mazda CX-9 vs Ford Edge: Interior Comforts
The most apparent difference between these two SUVs is their passenger space. The Mazda CX-9 is a 3-row SUV, offering room for seven with 135.1 cubic feet of passenger volume. The Ford Edge, meanwhile, only provides two rows of seating. That means it only carries up to five people, and its passenger volume maxes out at 113.9 cubic feet.
In addition to offering more passenger space, the Mazda CX-9 also offers more high-tech features. Its MAZDA CONNECT™ infotainment system, for example, is much more advanced than the SYNC® 3 system available in upgraded Edge models.
This is most evident in how you use the system. The Mazda CX-9 is available with a Multifunction Commander control, which sits where your arm naturally falls. This means you can reach for it while you’re driving without issue; it’s an intuitive and user-friendly system.
You won’t find a similar innovation in the Ford Edge, which still hasn’t figured out a way to make its touchscreen display look good. Instead, the American SUV decided to focus on replacing its gear knob for a rotary shifter. This is an interesting development, but it doesn’t add much to the drive.
Mazda CX-9 vs Ford Edge: Performance Specs
Each vehicle comes standard with a turbocharged 4-cylinder engine that turns 93-octane fuel into 250 horsepower. The Ford Edge EcoBoost® also provides 280 lb-ft of torque at 3,000 RPM.
Compare that to the SKYACTIV®-G, which provides 310 lb-ft of torque at 2,000 RPM. Most of your driving falls closer to the 2,000 RPM range, so this higher torque at a lower range is notable. It means that, even though maximum horsepower is the same in both engines, the SKYACTIV®-G in the Mazda CX-9 will feel more powerful for everyday driving.
Mazda CX-9 vs Ford Edge: Safety Ratings
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), which performs crash tests on new vehicles, awarded a 5-Star Overall Safety Rating to both SUVs in our comparison. However, only the Mazda CX-9 can also boast the title of 2019 TOP SAFETY PICK from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).
In addition to crashworthiness, the IIHS also looks at available crash avoidance and mitigation systems. This is where the Mazda CX-9 pulled ahead of its competition. Its headlights on the Touring trim do a much better job of lighting up the road than any headlight option available in the Ford Edge.
